It felt like falling. Maya flew down the wall. Not a wall of stone, but a wave. A great wall of water in Nazaré, Portugal. 

The violent wave fell hard. It pushed Maya with great force. And then she crashed. Great white breakers fell over her. And she disappeared into the sea.

On that day in 2013, Maya Gabeira almost died. The wave broke her leg. Two more waves rolled over her. When pulled from the ocean, she was not breathing. But she was saved.
