The famous professor of Psychology, B.F. Skinner said, “We shouldn’t teach great books; we should teach a love for reading”. I’m Joseph Poulshock, PhD., and I am asking the question, “Why read big?”
Reason number is because of “Ease and Enjoyment”. To learn English, to learn a foreign language through reading, we can read easy and enjoyably. So what do we mean by easy?
When you read easy it means that you know about 98% of the words on every page. So when you read 100 words, you only see two unknown words in that text, in that story. This means that it’s easy for you to guess the unknown words from context.
So big, easy reading is easy, and we have ways to do that. We have graded readers, and stories that are easy for language learners to read. It’s also enjoyable, one, because we use stories. And stories are enjoyable and more enjoyable than study. Which would you rather do? Hit yourself over the head with a large grammar book? Or enjoy stories?
Well this is just one way of saying that reading stories is more enjoyable than study. Of course study is important, but reading is essential, and it can be very enjoyable. The hard part is that it’s big. You have to read a lot – 30,000 words, 300,000 words for breakthrough. Two million words to equal 1 year of study abroad.
But the easy part and the fun part are that it’s easy, the level of the text is easy for you and you can enjoy stories and learning new information. So that’s reason # 1 why smart learners read big. And my name is Joseph Poulshock from Big English Success and ReadOasis.com.
