You can read faster with practice! To improve your reading speed, you need to read easy texts. This means you need to know all the vocabulary and grammar in a text. For speed and fluency, here’s the basic rule. Use easy and familiar material.

Guests at ReadOasis

At ReadOasis.com, Guest users can use the *QNM Speed Reading Course for free. Here’s how:

  1. Start with Story 1: Life in the Pacific Islands
  2. Use a stopwatch on your smartphone and click start.
  3. When you finish reading, stop your stopwatch and note the time.
  4. Use the Progress Chart and write an X in the box to show your reading time and words-per-minute.
  5. Then take the quiz. Write the score of the quiz in the Progress Chart
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 with the next stories.
  7. Try to do this about 3 times per week.

Work to improve your speed! If you score 8, 9, or 10 on quizzes, try to read faster the next time. If English is your second (or 3rd…) language, set a goal to read about 200 words per minute. You can do it!

Members at ReadOasis

ReadOasis members can also use the Progress Chart and a stopwatch. But members can use the “Click to Start Timer” and “I read this story!” buttons. Here’s how:

  1. Start with Story 1: Life in the Pacific Islands.
  2. Click the start timer. Read the story.
  3. Click “I read this story! Honestly!”
  4. Note your reading speed on the yellow pop-up. Write it on the progress chart.
  5. Take the quiz. Write your score on the chart.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 with the next stories.
  7. Try to do this about 3 times per week.

With big reading, you can improve all your language skills. And big reading makes you smarter. So, when you improve your reading speed, you improve your language and smarts at a faster speed!
