It was dark outside and freezing. Ice and snow shined gray and white under the light of the moon and the lights on the streets. In the surrounding valley, an icy breeze blew through the trees and over the cold waters of the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers. In the four small towns of The Valley, lights in windows were going out one by one. It was bedtime.
