In 1613, the English kidnapped Pocahontas. They wanted to exploit the situation so they could negotiate with the Indians. During her captivity, a man named John Rolfe fell in love with her. He asked for her hand in marriage, and chief Powhatan consented because he wanted to make peace with the English. In 1614, Pocahontas and John Rolfe were wed in a church in the community of Jamestown.
