I smiled. I knew that I had nothing to fear. The cry, I said, was my own in a dream. The old man, I said, was not in the country. I took the policemen all over the house. I told them to search the house well. After a while I led them to his room. I brought chairs and told them to rest. I put my own chair exactly above the place where I had buried the old man.
