She brought the stranger into the room. He looked uncomfortable and nervous. “I’m very sorry for the room,” said Mrs. White. “It’s a mess right now, and my husband has left his old coat on the rack after working in the garden.”

The man listened but, strangely, said nothing. Mrs. White waited as long as she could, waiting for the man to speak his business. But he remained strangely silent for some time.
