“If I go home with nothing,” she thought “my father might beat me again.” Besides, her home was almost as cold as the street. It was only a room in an old, broken down building. The roof was full of cracks and holes. Her father put straw and old clothes in the cracks and holes. But the wind and snow often came through.

Her hands were nearly dead with cold. This time, she spoke to herself. “Maybe one match would warm my hands just a little.” ...
