In Rome there was once a poor slave whose name was Androcles. His master was a mean man. The master enjoyed hurting his slaves. He often punished Androcles, even when he had done nothing wrong. At last Androcles decided to run away.
He hid himself in the woods for many days. But there was no food to be found, and he grew weak and sick. He thought he might die of hunger. So one day he went into a cave and lay down. Soon he was fast asleep.
