Once upon a time there lived an old Queen. Her husband had been dead some years, and he left her with one child, a beautiful daughter. When this daughter grew up, she was to be married to a King's son, who lived far away.

Now when the time came for her to leave, the mother made preparations. She gave her daughter some of her hair, saying, "Dear child, take care of this lock of hair, and it will keep you out of trouble."
