Poseidon held power as the brother of Zeus. Just as Zeus ruled over the land and the sky, Poseidon ruled over the rivers and the seas. He always carried a spear with three points called a trident. When he struck the sea with his spear, fierce storms would arise. Then with a word he could calm the dashing waves and make the surface of the water as smooth as glass.
